Rastech operates the UK’s only Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) growing King Prawns commercially. We are in the process of building the UK’s first commercial King Prawn hatchery to meet our own needs and those of the nascent UK industry. The UK imports around 53,000t/pa of warmwater prawns which are often grown in environmentally damaging ways, use antibiotics and other chemicals and are implicated in poor employment practices. We offer the alternative of a locally produced product, grown on brownfield sites without the use of antibiotics and with around 7,000 less food miles.
Our ethos is one of reducing waste and re-using the wastes of others by employing circular economy principles to all we do. Even in Scotland it has proved to be possible to run our facility on renewable energy in the forms of solar PV and biomass.
